Run. Day 2.

I actually went blading yesterday, which is why today is only my second run. I skipped Friday altogether - there just weren't enough hours in the day to do everything that I wanted to.

Side note: Maybe I'll take my running gear with me to Stats, and on my breaks (which can be up to 2 hours long) I can get a run in. There are showers there, so I wouldn't have to worry about smelling afterwards or anything....hrm....

My first day run didn't have much of an effect on me - my thighs hurt a little the next day, but that was it. I didn't feel winded after the run, I didn't feel anything, really, so I made an executive decision today to up the ante. So instead of the "run 1, walk 4" I did a "run 2 walk 3" pretty much the entire time (except at the beginning, where I did a 5 minute walk warm-up, ran 1, than walked 4.)

Again, I was out for a good half-hour, not counting the warm-up/cool-down walks, and stretching. All of that added another 15 minutes. Maybe this is too long for a beginner runner, but anything less seems.....lazy. Maybe because for me, walking is not exercise. Walking is what I do for 40 minutes everyday during the week, so it's nothing. Within the half-hour, I get in aobut 12 minutes of running time, which seems worth it.

Whatever. I still prefer blading (by a large margin, actually) but that could be because I'm not really running yet - more like jogging, quickly, and interspaced between bouts of walking....

I went for a run!

It was a long run, too.

I remember when my friend Steph was starting to run, and she was telling me how the book she got (she's a book learner) was talking about "running for one minute, walking for five" or something along those lines, and it made sense to me. I mean, a beginner runner isn't going to just go out and BAM! run for 10 minutes straight....

So I walked to the canal (5 minutes) ran for one minute, walked for 5, ran for 2, walked for 3, stopped and did some stretching[1], turned around, ran for 2 minutes, walked for 4, ran for 1 minute, walked for 3, ran for 1, did some stretching, then walked the 5 minutes home.

Where I promptely drank lots of water 'cause I was thirsty.

And now I understand why I see that guy walking home in the dead of winter, wearing shorts. At 7 am. I worse a long sleeve shirt over a t-shirt, and I had to roll up the sleeves. It's 9C out there, which is nice, but not all that warm (for me).

But go me!

[1]I used some of the same stretches I did as a skater - one leg up, resting on something (in this case, the back of a bench), other leg straight, and body bent over the lifted leg. When I started running, after walking, I noticed that my thigh muscles had started to stiffen up, so I wanted to make sure that I stretched them as well, not just my calves.
