For anyone who has silver;
for small items (like earrings or rings) a dab of white toothpaste works incredibly well. Just rub the toothpaste into the tarnished areas. The toothpaste will start to turn a grey-ish colour, as it takes the tarnish off, then just rinse it in water to clean it off. Repeat if necessary.
For larger items (say a necklace, or cutlery), a paste of baking soda and water works well. Just rub the baking soda paste onto the item with a cloth, then rinse. You can also "soak" the item in the paste if it's really tarnished.
I know the toothpaste works (very sparkly hoops now!) and I'm trying the baking soda as I type.
